Perrères Power Plant
The Perrères hydroelectric power plant, located in the municipality of Valtournenche, is of the reservoir type and began operation in 1943.
Its hydropower generation is strategically important for the surrounding area, particularly because of its location at the head of long side valleys and its proximity to large tourist resorts, for which continuity of power supply must be ensured for the operation and complete safety of ski lifts.
Its special feature is that it can also operate in separate service, i.e., supplying power to the local grid in full autonomy if necessary. The austere and simple central building, a typical mid-twentieth-century construction, houses inside - in addition to the generator sets - the 132-kV step-up transformers and the equipment needed to feed power into the national power grid. The two Pelton water turbines have a combined output of 18 MW.
