Verrès Power Plant
The Verrès hydroelectric power plant is located in the narrow gorge carved over millennia by the Evançon stream. The historic medieval castle of Verrès is just a few meters away, protecting the narrow streets of the town’s historic centre.
At Verrès, hydropower is strongly linked to history: the particular location of the plant constrained the expansion of the engine room building, but at the same time sharpened the planners’ efforts to achieve the goal of placing as many as six units and two transformers in the limited space available.
Normally, classic hydropower units consist of one or two water turbines connected to a single alternator, while in the Verrès plant a generating unit consists of two alternators connected to a single turbine, placed centrally between the two alternators.
The power plant has a total capacity of 12.3 MW.
